Yesterday night, at 3.32 am, a terrible earthquake hit the city of L’Aquila and its surroundings causing casualties and destruction while rescue work is hampered by continuing aftershock.

At present two hundred and 28 people are now known to have died and 50 people are still missing.

Among the victims of this huge tragedy there’s also a young rugby player from L’Aquila Rugby, Lorenzo Sebastiani.

Lorenzo, who was only 20, was at his second season with the senior team in “Serie A” (National Division 1), and played  at prop. He was also in the Under19 Italian squad during the 2007 World Cup and has been a member of the Under 19  “Ivan Francescato” FIR Elite Academy in Tirrenia.

Friends and rugby people all over Italy were praying to find him still alive, but unforunately this morning it was confirmed Lorenzo didn’t survive the earthquake. Words fail.

All the Italian Rugby community is in mourning for Lorenzo and for all the other victims.

FIR, the Italian Rugby Federation, opened a subscription to help the victims of the earthquake in Abruzzo, and announced a minute’s silence before every game that will be played until next 12/4, and any rugby activity in Abruzzo will be suspended.
