She would have made a great scrum-half

If she ever had the chance to play Rugby, she would have made a great scrum-half: clever, brave, ready and willing. Anna Politkovskaja, the Russian journalist who has been killed two years ago today, fought hard in what she believed and gave a voice to those who couldn’t speak for themselves.

She lived her life under a costant threat but she never drew back from telling the truth about what she saw, whether it was human rights abuses in Chechnya, Vladimir Putin’s colonial policy in the Caucasus region, Chechen terrorism or state terrorism.

“I think the duty of doctors is to give health to their patients, the duty of the singer to sing, and the duty of the journalist is to write what this journalist sees in reality,” she said.

She would not stop reporting what she saw, so she was stopped.

The least that we can do is to remember her and her work and try to follow her example of strenght and integrity.
