Richie is a Barbarian

Allblacks‘ Captain Richie McCaw is going to switch jersey, next 3rd of December, when he’ll temporary dismiss the all black uniform to wear the legendary black-and-white hooped jersey of the Barbarians!

Founded in 1890, the Baa-baas, as they are also called, are “a rugby club which brings together players from different clubs to play a few matches each year to play attacking, adventurous rugby without the pressure of having to win,” as their website say.

The attacking and adventurous rugby is undoubtly in Richie’s DNA, but as for the second part of the sentence, here’s a totally different story: it is something completely new to someone who’s never allowed to lose… an Allblack!

Anyway, Richie McCaw will be part of a Baa-baas squad coached by South African Jake White, against Australia in the Olympic Centenary Match at Wembley on December 3.

Last December the Barbarians beat World Champion South Africa 22-5 at Twickenham, while this year’s game celebrates the one-hundredth anniversary of the Olympic Games first being held in London in 1908. On that occasion, Australia – or Australasia as it was called – won the gold medal in the rugby union competition when they defeated Great Britain 32-3 in the final at White City Stadium.

Despite the incredible work rate Richie has displayed during the past TriNations, he’s not going to play on his own…. the rest of the team hasn’t been appointed yet, so stay tuned. 😉

*UPDATING* – The Barbarians have already lined up an array for stars, including McCaw, fellow New Zealanders Jerry Collins, Joe Rokocoko and Carl Hayman along with the nucleus of South Africa’s 2007 World Cup-winning side.

The Springboks will be represented by Percy Montgomery, Jean de Villiers, Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez, John Smit, Bakkies Botha and Schalk Burger, with their triumphant coach Jake White in charge of the side.

    (LOL)

  2. “without the pressure of having to win” you always play to win don’t you? so there’s always pressure surely?

anyway, that will be a great side to watch though. love the baa-baas.

p.s. he wasn;t wearing the patch just for pirate day – don’t you know ALL cantabs are one eyed 😉

  3. well, of course you always play to win, we’re rugby players, aren’t we? 😉
but when you have no pressure, no fear to make mistakes, then all your talent can flow freely, and if you play in a happy mood, you can only do good.
At least this is what I’ve tried to pass to my young players.

BTW so you mean that Richie usually wear a fake eye when he plays? but… is it IRB approved??? 😀

PS thanks for your visit and comment.

  4. […] just read on another blog that our boy Richie McCaw is going to play for the Baa Baas! In fact he is going to skipper them! […]
